SCS donates safety glasses, gloves to MHP staff

A simple question from a daughter to her father sparked a donation Monday morning to local hospital workers in need of protective equipment.

Chris Lux, a Science teacher at Shelbyville High School, was recently asked by his daughter, a nurse at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, if he had any safety goggles.

Knowing the school had a supply of protective equipment, Lux then went to school board member Curt Johnson, which sparked a discussion of Major Health Partners Medical Center coming into need of extra gear.

“We have enough for four labs,” said Lux Monday after delivering several boxes containing nearly 1,000 protective safety goggles, masks and latex gloves to MHP’s Administration building.

In conjunction with middle school staff, the donation was put together Sunday.

MHP is currently seeking Tyvek suits, safety glasses/goggles and face masks to protect its staff from the COVID-19 outbreak.

Donations may be directed to Angela Gill (agill@majorhospital.org) at the MHP Administration building, 2325 Intelliplex Drive, in Shelbyville. She will then coordinate the donations and deliver them to the MHP Medical Center.

“We have a really good community ... a really good community,” said Gill Monday morning.

MHP continues to stress social distancing as a way to limit the spread of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus.

If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, call the MHP COVID-19 hotline at 317-392-DOCS so a member of the MHP team can direct you as to the next steps in identification and treatment.

MHP Family & Internal Medicine’s Walk-in Clinic is closed until further notice. MHP Pediatrics is continuing to operate as normal and will still see walk-in patients.

As of Friday, MHP had tested 46 patients with results back on 23. Only one person in Shelby County has been identified as having coronavirus.

At the current time, there is a severe blood shortage due to the virus, especially for O-negative blood type. Anyone who would like to donate blood can visit www.redcross.org/ to learn more and schedule an appointment.
