All 5 Shelby County commencements to be outdoors

McKeand Stadium will be the site of this year’s Shelbyville graduation ceremony at 9 a.m. July 25.

All five Shelby County high schools will now be hosting commencement ceremonies outdoors after the Shelbyville Central school board voted in favor of the move on Wednesday. Shelbyville’s graduation will now take place at McKeand Stadium after the Shelby County Health Department recommended that the four schools originally planning indoor ceremonies move them outside. The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. July 25 with the first rain date at 8 p.m. the same day. A second rain date is set for 7 p.m. July 26. If seniors are still unable to celebrate their graduation during the second rain date, the event will take place at 9 a.m. July 27 and will be available for graduates only. The July 27 event will be live streamed and recorded for family to watch. Four tickets will be available for each family and will be given to students at the 10 a.m. commencement rehearsal on July 24. Prior to SCS moving its ceremony outdoors, Waldron, Morristown and Southwestern high schools all announced they were moving their events outside. Waldron’s ceremony remains scheduled for 9 a.m. July 18 but will take place at the track, next to the elementary school. Morristown’s will be at 11 a.m. July 18, with a rain date on July 25, at the high school baseball diamond. And Southwestern’s will be at 7 p.m. July 24 on the soccer field. A rain date is set for 7 p.m. July 25. Triton Central’s ceremony was already scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. July 18 at Tiger Stadium.
